Access Denied - Folder Permissions as Administrator in Windows XP

I recently setup a Windows XP Pro virtual machine w/Virtual PC 2008. So... I'm the only user account on the host - Administrator - and life should be grand.

While working on a specific project for a client, I copied to my VM C: drive a copy of the solution from a network share at the client site.

After some work - a couple days later - I needed to overwrite the local virtual machine copy with a refresh from the client site.

I continued to get the Access Denied when trying to replace files.

Okay... No biggy - I'm administrator - so I elect to DELETE the folder locally - I get the same error.

So... I open Windows Explorer (Start-->Run-->Explorer [Enter]) and browse to that folder. I select the folder - Right-Click-->Properties, and to my surprise, there is no Security tab. Mmmm Gotta love these mysteries.

By default, with Windows XP Pro SP2/SP3 - the Security tab is turned off.

To turn this on - open Windows Explorer, select Tools-->Options- you should see a screen like the following:

Click on the VIEW tab here...

Scroll all the way down and uncheck the Use Simple... blah blah blah

Windows Mobile Device Center and sync problems with the Verizon / HTC VX6800 SmartPhone

I was able to sort out most of the setup on this neat new phone - but for the life of me I could not get Windows Mobile Device Center to detect it.

The phone comes with Windows Mobile 6, and you would think all would go smooth insofar as the sync to your Windows Vista setup.

Alas - there is an update I found that magically resolved the issue - it's Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 update - specifically for SmartPhones/PDA's running Mobile 6

Scroll down and select your language - go through the Genuine Advantage Validation of your OS - and the rest will magically fall right into place (PS - make sure your phone is connected - syncs right up).

HTH's someone else that's spent the last couple hours trying to sort this out.

Not all things Windows! - Indeed.

I pulled out an older Sony notebook - PIII / 800Mhz - but it has a half gig of RAM in it and I thought it'd be a great one to leave around the house (translate - wireless) for anyone that needs a handy computer.

I receive the MSDN DVD's - like many of us do - and the latest XP / SP2 disc I had was November 2007. Cool beans - I'll just boot that and load it.

Well... You'll get a chuckle out of this one.

This may be a November 2007 release (and here it's only December 2007) - but when I ran for updates? It first downloaded the Genuine Advantage program - then 92 more updates!!!! NINETY-TWO - OUTRAGREOUS.

I guess XP won't be supported much longer either!

The following I wanted to share because this individual sorted through this error and his resolution may help someone else. I am posting a summary of our correspondence.

1. BizTalk 2004 (installed DSO and Client Tool for AS) 2. SQL Server 2000 (SP3a and SQL2000-KB810185-8.00.0878-ENU.exe)

3. Analysis Server 2000 (SP3a - sql2kasp3.exe)

My BizTalk 2004 configuration is continually failing with message - "Unable to connect to registry on the server (machineName), or you are not a member of the OLAP Administrators group on this server"

Initially, based on what you have conveyed, the BTS Administrator's Group needs access to the OLAP server's OLAP Admins group.

Usually, the same service account is used for BTS and OLAP - so you do not run into this problem.

Check the service account / user account that is running both the BTS Admins group and the OLAP group.

Okay.

I changed the Analysis Service to run under the credentials of domain\BtsService.

I added the 'domain\BtsAdmin' account and 'domain\Biztalk Server Administrators' as members of OLAP Administrators group on each box.

I still get the same result.

I also changed the Analysis service to run under domain\BtsAdmin but still the same error.

Any more ideas??

There can obviously be a number of issues.

Have you tried walking through the stand-alone deployment that on my bog? It's pretty straight-forward, and works perfectly?

Answer to your questions:

<machinename> is the box where OLAP or Analysis Service is installed. I get my actual machine name in the error message.

I tried running OLAP under local service and still the same result. There are no services running on the BTS box that I can see.

I did check the event viewer and there were no error messages or warnings on both boxes.

I did see this problem listed on msdn and applied the patch they suggested at the bottom of the following page:

Problem: You may encounter the error "Unable to connect to registry on the server (machineName), or you are not a member of the OLAP Administrators group on this server" or the BAM cube DTS fails on execution.

Open Component Services... Expand Component Services-->Computers, and right-click on My Computer.

Select the MSDTC tab, then in the lower-left, Security Configuration.

Ensure that

NetWork DTC Access - checked

Network Administration - checked

Network Transactions - checked

Network Clients - checked

Transaction Internet Protocol - unchecked XA Transactions - Checked

And it should be running as the NETWORK SERVICE account.

On BTS Server, the Network Clients was not checked and I checked it.

On OLAP box, MSDTC was not enabled. I enabled it and ensured the option below were checked and rebooted the box.

Found out...need to install sp3a on the BTS box as well.

SOLUTION

As you can see, the problem was solved by installing the installing Service Pack 3a on the BTS box. On this box was the SQL Server/OLAP client and DSO (Decision Support Object) tools, but without the SP3a patch, the error was persistent.

I want to thank Shalabh for permission to post this information – and I am glad another problem has been solved.

Service Account

When working with clients to install BizTalk Server I find it interesting that not many of the developers understand what is meant by service account - insofar as creating the account that BTS will run as.

The service account is a user account on a stand-alone computer or on a domain. When you create an account for BTS to run as, you are creating a service account.

Often I use the ID BtsService whether stand-alone or on a domain. This account is a member of the Users or Domain Users group by default, and should have NO OTHER permissions assigned to it (on several engagements I have found this account to be a member of the Administrator's Group - and this is not necessary, and could allow security breaches).
